What our guests had to say

We have asked our guests for a small comment and hopefully a holiday photo that would illustrate their stay with us. This is what they told us!

"Ralph, a short note of thanks and appreciation for yours and Stuarts generous assistance at this testing time. Your inputs, assistance and offer of participation in the long haul solution was greatly appreciated. As a small token of thanks please treat Ana and yourself to a meal and a glass or two on us. Best wishes"
Red, Philip, Fergus, Brian, Bren & Dennis, Ireland – April 2010 – Casal de Santa Maria – Group stranded in Portugal due to the volcanic ash incident. They were only charged at cost (non-profit) for the 4 extra nights' accommodation.

"Thank you again for helping to make our short stay very relaxing and worthwhile. We will be back and have the opportunity to explore the delights of Sintra in more detail but more importantly take in the village atmosphere and the beach. We appreciated your personal attention and care especially in collecting us from Estoril and return to the airport, all on time and no fuss. Your advice about local places to go and eat was first class."
David and Vikki Templeman, Australia – October 2009 – Vila Arcos

"Thanks for wonderful days in your house. Ten crazy Norwegians have lived here in connection with the Motor GP race in Estoril. We had good days at the pool and enjoy us in the house at night.
We also have taken trips to Cascais and Lisboa. We rent a car to travel around, and we took the old train to Sintra. The seafood tasted well, and people are nice. We also have taken bath in the Atlantic. We are Vikings from the west coast of Norway you know."

Aksel, Dag, Terie, Bjiom & A.K, Torill, Perlvar, Ingrid & Magne and Paul, Norway – October 2009 – Casal de Sta Maria

"Just a quick note to thank you for enhancing our holiday experience. This was the first time that we have booked a self catering cottage where the owner has given time to provide recommedations regarding sights to see and places to eat and, indeed, so much more. It meant that we were able to make the most of our time without the hit or miss element. We truly enjoyed our experience with Lisbon Coast Cottages and have already recommended you to friends and colleagues. Although we saw some memorable sights we know that we only scratched the surface of what the Sintra area has to offer. So we will be back. Thanks once more to Ralph for his kind attention – it was "bonkers" (to steal an expression!)."
Steve and Debbie Jones, England – September 2009 – Vila Arcos

"We had a fantastic and incredibly restful holiday and as we had only a week and already knew the village, we were able to make the most of our time. You both made the week so much better for us in sorting out the bikes, taxi and airport pick up and drop off. All those things really mattered. Couldn't believe how lucky we were with seeing the procession too on our last afternoon. The rides to and from Sintra on the tram just epitomised to us what a leisurely time we were having!"
Julie Westrop, England – August 2009 – Vila Arcos

Praia das Maçãs

"Ralph & Ana, many thanks for helping us to have a great holiday. We all enjoyed staying in Vila Arcos and your attention to detail so much."
Maurice, Ger & Kids, Ireland – August 2009 – Vila Arcos

"Arrived back safley to gales and rain. We all had a fantastic holiday, thanks very much for all your input, the jam was superb. Also thanks for the guided bike ride, it was great not to get a puncture for a change. What a fantastic restaurant, can't remember the name but it would be worth going back just to go there again. Good luck for next season and we may see you again."
William & Jo Jennings, England – August 2009 – Casa da Bia

"What a fantastic house. We have enjoyed a glorious 2 week stay. All restaurants were good, particularly 1888, Nautilus and Sabores (across the road with 20% off voucher!). Delicious seafood & fish. Sintra & Lisbon are obvious choices to visit but well worth the trip. It was an added bonus to have the luxury of contacting Ralph at any time for help and advice, no matter how trivial – THANK YOU!!! We would definitely recommend Lisbon Coast Cottages"
Brogans, Tobins & Parrs, Wigan, England – August 2009 – Casal de Sta Maria

"4 families - 14 people - great time had by all – best restaurant Nautilus, surfing lesson a must, Simon & Karen are great – tram to Sintra, bus to Cascais, lovely beaches big waves, pool great & table tennis. Great location with lots to do for all ages, limited nightlife for older teenagers, although they could have travelled to Cascais or Lisbon. A week was not enough really."
The Ashmors, Bakers, Lees & Humphreys, Norway – July 2009 – Casal de Sta Maria

At the cottage

"Thank you Ralph and Ana for a wonderful stay in Villa Arcos in July. The two weeks just flew by. We loved everything about the village and the cottage which was very peaceful and quiet and made for relaxation. Everything was within walking distance, beach, pool, bars and restaurants. We had some wonderful meals but by far the best was in Adega so thank you Ralph for the recommendation. The bus service is great and we spent many days exploring Sintra (which we fell in love with) and also had a day trip to Lisbon by train where we went on a tram tour out to Belem. The cottage was lovely, very clean and comfortable and we loved having breakfast in the courtyard while we planned our day. You both run a very professional business with a great personal touch and we wouldnt hesitate to recommend you (have been doing so to everyone we talk to). We will definately be back."
Brenda, Jim & Meg, Dublin, Ireland – July 2009 – Vila Arcos

"14 days of peace, joy and recreation in your house. 3 families from western Norway, 6 adults have enjoyed late evenings in the garden, 7 children of various ages have loved the pool and all of the many possibilities for play and fun in the house and surroundings. An extraordinary house, big enough for 14 people, small enough for good social settings. Thank you for beautiful days here in Casal de Santa Maria"
3 families from Bergen, Norway – July 2009 – Casal de Sta Maria

"We loved our visit to Praia das Maçãs and particularly our stay at Casa da Bia. Thank you Ralph for meeting us at the airport and again the next day and for giving us so many helpful tips on places to eat, castles to visit and directions as well as a 'Welcome' basket of wonderful local products. We loved Casa da Bia. It was very comfortable and provided everything we would need for our visit... We highly recommend these cottages and this area. We visited Sintra and took the train to Lisbon another day. The children enjoyed personalisecd surfing lessons at the local surf school and now have the 'surf bug' . There is so much to see and do in this area for all the family. Ralph and Ana you are both very professional and personable, thank you for everything and we hope to be back."
Mary, Paul, Ellen & Tom, Ireland – July 2009 – Casa da Bia

"Thanks very much for providing such a great accommodation for our stay here. Watch this space – we might come back!"
Manti, Paul & Oliver, Finland – July 2009 – Casal de Sta Maria

Praia das Maçãs

"Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed our holiday in Casa da Olga. The cottage was perfect for us – Praia das Maçãs was great for our daughter Isla and everything was very well organised and easy. We really enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend you to any other holidaymakers – great weather too, which was a bonus!"
Dave, Liz and Isla, UK – July 2009 – Casa da Olga

Praia das Maçãs

"Thank you SO much for our fantastic holiday – it really was the best holiday that Mike and I have ever had. The villa is gorgeous and extremely well looked after, and Praia da Maçãs was stunning and so much to do in Sintra! We are thinking of ways we could go back 'cos one week just wasn’t enough. Maybe in September or October. Thanks Ralph for all your advice, we had a fantastic time."
Clare Rowlands, UK – July 2009 – Casal de Sta Maria

Cabo da Roca

"We had a very relaxing week, it was lovely to find a cottage for two in such a quiet resort. It was great being collected from the airport by Ralph who gave us all the information we needed to find our way around. We enjoyed our days out in Sintra and Lisbon using buses and trains. We had everything we needed in Casa da Olga and enjoyed shopping locally for fish and meat to barbeque in the lovely courtyard. We would recommend this as a very enjoyable break to our friends. Thank you."
Julie & Mike Williamson, Cambridgeshire, UK – June 2009 – Casa da Olga

Praia das Maçãs

"Great surfing in praia das maçãs for all abilities and just a short walk away with good cafe stops on route, thanks Ralph and Ana for a great holiday, see you again this year, just cant keep away."
The Chambers Family, UK – Stayed August 2008 – Vila Arcos

"Ralph
Just to let you know we are all safely back. We really enjoyed our stay at your Villa. We rented in France and Italy and this was the best….the pool, the playthings, the proximity of activities and the village, restaurants etc. The accommodations such as the linen, the cutlery, etc were all well supplied., and yes we did not need a car. We enjoyed the buses and the taxis. Thanks again."

The Comeaus, Canada – June 2009 – Casal de Sta Maria

"We loved our visit to Praia das Maçãs and particularly our stay at Casa da Bia. Ralph met with us the first day and gave us many helpful tips on places to eat, castles to visit and directions as well as a Welcome basket of wonderful local products. We loved Casa da Bia. It was very comfortable and provided everything we would need for our week visit. The courtyard was especially enjoyable and contained a wonderful barbeque area and lots of seating. We highly recommend these cottages and this area. We drove to Sintra and took the train to Lisbon for the day. What a great way to visit Lisbon and not worry about the traffic. There is so much to see and do in this area, we could not do it all in one week. Ralph and Ana are both very personable and we enjoyed meeting them."
Don and Noreen Anderson, Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada – May 2009 – Casa da Bia

Cabo da Roca

"Dear Ralph and Ana
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay in Casa da Olga. We very much enjoyed our walk from the cottage to Cabo Roca. We were very impressed with ourselves for having completed the walk in 2.5 hours. Your advice on the trail markings were excellent as well as all the other information you gave us about the area such as restaurants, beaches and Sintra. We hope to be able to visit you again soon. All the best"

Mike & Margot, Heidelberg, Germany – May 2009 – Casa da Olga

"One of the best things about the charming beach side village of Praia das Maçãs is The Vila Arcos. What a perfect place to call home for our 4 night stay in April. We chose the area as a base to explore Sintra but had no idea there would be so many other distractions in the vicinity… we should have stayed for a week at least. The cottage is comfortable and immaculate and without doubt tended with great care and consideration to the guests' comfort. Undoubtedly my favorite part of the cottage was the fantastic courtyard garden, a great sun trap for just lazing, a barbeque or morning coffee! But what really made our experience at the Vila Arcos outstanding was meeting Ralph; thank you for the diverting conversations, tourist tips and warm welcome…
Thank you"

Lisa Gullete, Oregon, USA – April 2009 – Vila Arcos

"Ralph, thank you for a wonderful engagement at your cottages.
I do not understand the term 'custom' but our stay was superb. Your accommodations and service were wonderful.
As to pictures, in the town we visited after we left Sintra, I lost my digital camera!!! Zounds!!
We bought disposable cameras after that so have pic's of the rest of our trip but nothing of Lisbon and Sintra. Did I say Zounds!!?
You do a great job of making tourists feel comfortable.
Thanks again, Ken and Carolyn"

Surfing at Praia das Maçãs

"If you visit Praia das Maçãs (and stay at Vila Arcos), you'll be in for a treat… not just the great hospitality afforded by Ralph, but the lovely cottage, wonderful beach and local cuisine! After a lot of research and many questions to Ralph (which I must say were always answered, without leaving you feeling you were being a pain - which of course, I was!) - we chose this location and cottage, very simply because it felt like too good to be true on, price, plus all the extras - and it didn't fail to live up to the feeling of having bagged a really good deal! The cottage is very simple, but contemporary. It has all you need, although a family of 4 might struggle on the size of living communal living space - but this can be overcome if most of the time was spent out and about or sitting in the patio area outside (weather permitting.) It would benefit from a washing machine, but that is a minor issue and personal preference. We visited (in May out of season, which begins in earnest 1 June), and it was very quiet (which is what we wanted), but the bus services, local Lido, tennis courts (all of which looked great) and beach facilities (such as showers) were closed! The beach whilst lovely was not safe for swimming as there was no lifeguard until the season opened. The bus services were also a bit hit and miss, and so a car might be a good idea if you want to get around (even to nearby Sintra.) That said, we would recommend both the location and the cottage. The restaurants and local people are great, the climate perfect, location and surrounding areas are really lovely. We do a lot of travelling and love to try out new places, but on this occasion will make an exception and make this a regular location for our holiday, particularly as my son has made great friends with local children, met through taking lessons at the local surf school! We have recommended Lisbon Coast Cottages, and friends and family are already showing real interest (Ralph watch out...)"
Jaz Sargeant, UK – April 2009 – Vila Arcos

"Even though it rained we had great fun - even ended up in the pool! Lydia (6) made friends with a baby lobster in Buzio and had an amazing look around Monserrate behind the scenes.
Real insight and lots of memories. Thanks"

Quinta da Regaleira

"Upon our arrival we received a warm welcome from Ralph and indeed everyone we met during our stay in Casal de Santa Maria, which is located very near to the beautiful little town of Praia das Maçãs. Getting the airport transfer meant that we got our bearings straight away and knew where the local shops and restaurants were, and how to take advantage of the nearby bus service to take us into the heart of the stunning city of Sintra. From here it is easy to get the train into Lisbon.
The villa was immaculate, situated in a secure and secluded area with it's own pool and all mod cons. It has been sensitively refurbished to a high standard using marble, terracotta and cedarwood throughout and even underfloor heating!
The weather, especially for march, was all we could have wished for, allowing for leisurely walks during the day and long evenings out on the private verandah.
We will definitely be returning here, and would highly recommend it to all of our friends."

Martin & Kim, UK – March 2009 – Casal de Sta Maria

Praia das Maçãs

"We stayed at Casa da Olga in September 2008 and what a wonderful time to go with perfect weather and what a beautiful place! The cottage itself was immaculate with everything you needed for your stay. The quality of the bed linen, towels etc is that easily of a high starred hotel and rarely found in self-catering accommodation and the kitchen facilities served every need.
Praia das Macas is a lovely village with a superb and clean beach which is clearly very safe for children. There are a good range of places to eat out and an icecream bar that must be visited for its delicious homemade icecream. The cottages are ideally situated for access into the neighbouring town of Sintra which boasts many interesting sites for all generations and Lisbon is only a short train journey away (and only 3 euros 50 for a return!) with. We will definitely be returning to Lisbon Coast Cottages next year if we can! Thank you very much Ralph and Ana!!!"

Rebecca & Simon Whittaker, UK – September 2008 – Casa da Olga

"First we had a great time with you and really enjoyed the area and the cottage. The cottage was very well appointed and convenient to the beach and local facilities.
We were impressed with Praia das Maçãs which we found to be family friendly and it was less commercial then others areas locally which we also liked and appreciated.
Eating out was not expensive and there was plenty of choice in the village. If we didn't want to dress for dinner that wasn't a problem either. Lots of choice for the children and grown ups on the menu as well. Equally the local take away serviced really excellent food as well.
There was plenty to do in the area for all tastes as well. Sintra is a must (tunnels and floating books most especially) but there are also many other interesting places to visit as well."

Paul, Teresa, Alice & Emma Matthews, England – August 2008 – Casa da Bia

"We all had a great time at Vila Arcos. What a perfect location with beaches, cafes and shops all within walking distance and of course the surf lodge. What made it even better for me was the efficiency of the airport transfers and of course the personal service you provided.
It was also a bonus not to have to hire a car. Going to Sintra on the bus was a breeze, trying to park there would not have been fun. All in all a very memorable holiday and look forward to seeing you again."

Will, Emily, Jack & Sam Jennings, England – August 2008 – Vila Arcos

Windmills "We had a fabulous two weeks in your cottage. Praia das Maçãs is a pretty & chilled village and your cottage is nicely tucked away yet still very handy for the beach & restaurants. The villa was very clean and tidy, you were both lovely and friendly and we had the most relaxing time. What was also excellent was the ease and speed of access to Lisbon, Sintra and the airport whilst being in a rural village on the Atlantic coast. We will definitely be recommending you and your cottages to our friends."

Quinta da Regaleira

"We usually stay on campsites in France for our holidays, but this year decided to try Lisbon and were very happy to find Ralph and Ana's cottages in Praia das Maçãs. The accommodation was lovely and very convenient for the beach and restaurants. We enjoyed driving out to discover different unspoiled beaches and try the surf up and down the coast and especially liked the Guincho beaches.
Sintra is also a fascinating place with the Quinta da Regaleira a must for exploring with the kids and we enjoyed finding our own route up to the Moorish Castle at the top of the hills.
Lisbon was also interesting especially the aquarium at the old Expo site which has been developed with several activities and a big shopping centre! Should we decide to visit this area again (which is highly likely) we would definitely look up Ralph and Ana's accommodation as they were superb hosts."

Cath, Ian, Amy and Billy, St.Albans, UK – August 2007 – Vila Arcos

"Phelim and I had a lovely time in Portugal. Your wee cottage is absolutely lovely and you made our stay very comfortable there. I honestly can't think of anything that I could say to help you improve on your cottage or service."
Geraldine & Phelim Darby, Northern Ireland – August 2007 – Casa da Olga

At the Sporting stadium

"Have just returned from our second visit to Praia das Maçãs and Vila Arcos. In the past we have always gone to the west coast of the Algarve but last year decided to branch out and what a gem we found in Maçãs! The house is comfortable, spotlessly clean and well equipped with great outside space. The shop is just around the corner to get fresh bread for breakfast and everything is within walking distance – great restaurants. fantastic beach and a huge swimming pool if you fancy a change.
Ralph & Ana are great hosts, very friendly and helpful – Ralph remembered that the kids were into football and a few weeks before our visit let us know about a match at Sporting Lisbon which was a great experience. He also organised surfing lessons for them the previous year.
I would recommend the villa and the resort highly for a peaceful, relaxing holiday and one of my tips (there are many!) would be to have a tosta mista in Barmácia, get a seat by the window and watch the sufers catching the waves on a glittering sea – heaven!!"

Ginny, Adie, Jessie & Joel, Woodford Green, England – July 2007 – Vila Arcos

Casa do Limoeiro

"We have enjoyed our stay in Casa do Limoeiro very much. The house is definitely a gorgeous cottage full of character. The garden with two plum trees, a blue and a yellow – plus a lemon tree was naturally a great pleasure for the eye and the stomach. The house is very clean and comfortable and no noise disturbed us. We really relaxed reading and drinking too much coffee in the little paradise garden. As you can read about Sintra it is indeed a fantastic town, very beautiful landscape and architecture. Parque da Pena really impressed us, and we took a lot of pictures of trees, bushes and flowers. The rear walk up to Pena Palace is also a nice experience, good exercise. It is easy and nice to stay in Sintra, we enjoyed buying all the good food – meet, fruit, vegetables, cakes, bread… all better and cheaper than in Denmark. Normally our son does not like chicken, but different with the Portuguese grilled chicken. So whether we were eating out or at home, it was a pleasure. For us it was a perfect holiday combination: One busy week in Lisbon and one peaceful week in Sintra. Jakob, Per & Kate"
Per Larsen & Kate Bech, Vejle, Denmark – July 2007 – Casa do Limoeiro

Adega de Colares

"Great location and private. Clean Clean Clean!!!
Ceramic floors throughout and a granit wrap around patio with wonderful gardens. We stayed in the 2 bedroom cottage, and found it roomy for our family of 4.
Everything you need is there. Ralph and his Maria were great hosts. We were due to arrive July 28, but our accommodations did not work out for the 2 nights prior and we proceeded to get on to Sintra area. I called Ralph, and although he had already left the area, he recommended a decent place to stay for the night, and welcomed us the next day at no charge. You don't find people like this very often. Just to let you know, we stayed at 3 different places during our 18 days in Portugal, and the only place that did not work out, was the one that was recommended to us by a travel agent.
This was our first trip to Europe and very hesitant on booking on line. Ralph and I communicated several times by phone and email. We stayed in July of 2007 and the boys still talk about it. Great beaches, make sure to check out Grande Beach, and some of the less popular ones off the beaten track. We have some amazing photos. Don't be afraid to explore, whether by foot or by car. Ralph has done an amazing job on the web site. It is dead on, no surpises. Kids were 10 and 11 at the time. They were happy running down to the local market for the ice cream. Make sure to ask Ralph for the name of the very popular family restaurant in the next village (sorry, I forgot). Hope they still have the bbq stand by the fire station on Friday and Saturdays. Amazing chicken, and buns, crazy inexpensive. Make sure you get there early. We got a chance to get into the Colares winery, very cool. Restaurant eating could get pricy, but we took advance of the local butcher and had a few charcoal bbqs. Cafe down the way was great for breakfast or lunch. Large portions and very inexpensive. Good access to take rail to Lisbon. We would stay here again if every we find ourselves in Portugal again. There is something for everyone here."

Dave & Liz Haunts, Ottawa, Canada – July 2007 – Vila Arcos

Palácio da Pena

"We had a very nice stay your "Casa da Olga" Cottage and were pleased with your arrangements and the cottage itself - being all that we expected for facilities, up-keep and cleanliness, etc. We appreciated and well used the basket of "goodies" which you provided for us. They lasted all of our short stay with you until we left for our adventures into the rest of Portugal."
Pamella Coombes & Eugene Fydirchuck, Canada – June 2007 – Casa da Olga

Monserrate Palace

"Casa da Olga provided the ideal base for visiting the Lisbon coast and Sintra. The area, protected by the national park, is both beautiful and full of historic attractions, don't miss the palace and gardens in Sintra and Monserrate. The tram is a novel, cheap and interesting way to get to Sintra (Friday and weekends only) and avoids parking problems. The buses are equally convenient but not such fun. The area is well served for restaurants within walking distance of the villas, Adega das Azenhas was outstanding. We appreciated the warm welcome from Ana and Ralph and the friendliness of all the local people with whom we came into contact. Thank you,"
Mary & Garry Johnson, Letchworth, England – April 2007 – Casa da Olga

"From the USA, we were transported to the wonderful world of Praia das Maçãs and, indeed, of Portugal. In addition to enjoying the charming village, we took fabulous day trips throughout the region. Ralph and Ana's cottages provide delightfully simple quarters for relaxing or using as a home base for further exploration. Ana and Ralph are gracious hosts, providing translation services when needed, tips on places to visit, suggestions for restaurants, colorful information on national and local history and culture, and creature services beyond the norm to make our accommodations comfortable. We highly recommend these cottages for those who like to stay among the locals in pristine accommodations at a reasonable price."
Kathy & Dick Hughes and Jack Williamson, USA – April 2007 – Vila Arcos

"Casa da Olga is a clean and modern self-contained cottage which was ideal for the two of us. It was a good base for exploring the coastline (including Ericeira to the North) and Sintra (which is great for culture and eating-out). Ralph & Ana were very helpful and on-hand for general info. And a great tip-off for a local restaurant in Azenhas da Mar!"
Jason Vicent & Carly Rose, UK– April 2007 – Casa da Olga

Having a laugh under the garden grapes

"We had a great time here and everything was as Ana and Ralph said it would be. The beaches were very unspoilt and uncrowded, the villa was immaculate and it was easy to get around without a car. Sintra is definitely well worth a visit. We would certainly recommend this as a holiday."
Nigel & Carolyn Conquest, UK – August 2006 – Vila Arcos
